iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Pro max

iphone 14 pro max release date. The iPhone 14 range is getting more expensive. That was the narrative for months until a little-known leaker turned Apple's pricing on its head earlier this week.

A new report from influential market analyst TrendForce suggests that iPhone 14 buyers may not only be paying less than they expected, but also getting a lot more storage for their money.

Price

Looking at pricing, TrendForce has dropped the price margin for all iPhone 14 models to $50. For iPhone 14 Pro models, this means a potential price increase of $50 over previous analyst estimates. But the big news is how it affects standard models.

Suggested Price

The iPhone 14 is now suggested to start at $749, which is $50 less than the iPhone 13 ($799), with the iPhone 14 Plus starting at $849. This is a dramatic change from previous reports where each iPhone 14 model was tipped to increase in price by up to $100.

And it gets better. In addition to lower prices, TrendForce expects the iPhone 14 Pro and Max models to have 256GB of entry-level storage. According to the analyst, this combination of lower-than-expected price and higher-than-expected storage is a calculated gamble.

Bloomberg's Mark Gorman has leaked additional iPhone 14 details

Bloomberg's Mark Gorman has leaked additional iPhone 14 details in his latest Always On newsletter. Confirming the familiar design and camera leak, Gorman says Apple may remove the physical SIM card slot from iPhones entirely, "either this year or next year for some models."

Leaks

Leaks as far back as December claimed that Apple was toying with the idea of an eSIM-only iPhone 14, but that rumor was later silenced until Gorman's newsletter. The 'certain models' part is new, though, and makes sense as it will allow Apple to test the change on a smaller scale. Whether that's for Pro or non-Pro models remains to be seen.

Bigger Batteries

Interestingly, Gorman also claims that the iPhone 14 Pro models will have "bigger batteries" — though he doesn't expand on that. This contrasts with earlier battery capacity leaks, which suggested that battery capacities would be slightly reduced on all models except the iPhone 14 Pro Max. iPhone fans will be praying that Grumman's source comes out on top.

Interesting Detail about the iPhone 14

The Wall Street Journal has belatedly leaked an interesting detail about the iPhone 14 ahead of Apple's launch on Wednesday. With concerns that the standard model will be little more than the rebranded iPhone 13, complete with its predecessor's A15 chip, the WSJ reports that the new phones will use an "improved version" of the A15.

Performance

No further details were provided, but it lends considerable credence to a report by popular insider Leaks Apple Pro in early August that Apple would juice up the A15 for the iPhone 14 launch. How much is a point of contention, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the iPhone 13 Pro's A15 + 6GB RAM configuration carried over to the standard model.

A16 Chip

Whether Apple controversially rebrands it as the A16, as claimed with the true next-gen A16 sold as the 'A16 Pro' in the Pro models, remains to be seen. Certainly, this would be one of the riskiest marketing decisions Apple has made in years and not one that I believe is worth paying off.

After all, while the average iPhone owner is unlikely to know the name of the chipset inside their iPhone, I'm sure press coverage would change that quickly if there was a branding switcheroo.

"Under rising global inflation and exchange rate pressures, Apple is expected to adopt a more cautious pricing strategy so that its sales performance is not affected," the report states.

Leaks have been coming for months

Now here's the clever bit. Leaks have been coming for months that Apple will widen the price, design and feature differences between its iPhone 14 Pro and non-Pro models. The response to this has been largely negative and has been seen as a blunt attempt to sell consumers a time of growing economic distress.

Latest Pricing Leaks

But based on the latest pricing leaks, it's pretty smart. Aggressively pricing the standard iPhone 14 models will open the door for fans who may have struggled to upgrade this year. At the same time, the iPhone 14 Pro models don't hold back innovation for those who can afford to pay more. As a result, Apple can market value and innovate in the same range.
